New Delhi, May 29: Following his resignation as Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah arrived in Delhi on Friday. He met with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge. The discussions reportedly focused on forming a new cabinet and maintaining political balance after the power transition.
According to media reports, Siddaramaiah presented several key suggestions and demands to the party leadership. Notably, he advocated for his son, Yatindra Siddaramaiah, to be given a significant role in the new cabinet. However, there has been no official statement from the Congress leadership regarding this matter.
Meanwhile, the process of forming a new government in Karnataka has accelerated after the Governor accepted Siddaramaiah’s resignation. Party sources indicate that Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar may take the oath of office next week, alongside the formation of the new cabinet.
Sources suggest that the Congress is considering appointing four deputy chief ministers to achieve social and regional balance. A significant reshuffle in the new cabinet is anticipated, with nearly ten current ministers possibly being dropped.
Political insiders claim that leaders from both Siddaramaiah’s and Mallikarjun Kharge’s factions will receive adequate representation in the new cabinet. There is speculation that Priyank Kharge, the son of Mallikarjun Kharge and a current minister, may also be appointed as a deputy chief minister, along with two other leaders.
Siddaramaiah and D.K. Shivakumar have traveled to Delhi to finalize the names of the new ministers and deputy chief ministers. The Congress leadership is working on a balanced formula to avoid any dissent or factionalism during this power transition.
If four deputy chief ministers are appointed, Karnataka would join a select group of states with such a configuration. Previously, in 2019, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy formed a government in Andhra Pradesh with five deputy chief ministers.
