Rahul Gandhi Acquitted in Defamation Case Linked to Amit Shah Remarks

Lucknow, October 26: The MP-MLA court has acquitted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from a defamation case dating back eight years. This case was related to comments made during the Karnataka election campaign in 2018 regarding Amit Shah, the then president of the BJP. Rahul Gandhi was present in court when the verdict was announced.

In the ruling, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Shubham Verma stated that no substantial evidence was found to support the claims made by the complainant, Vijay Mishra. The court dismissed the allegations.

The case was filed in August 2018 by Vijay Mishra, a BJP leader from Hanumanganj in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Mishra claimed that during the Karnataka campaign, Rahul Gandhi referred to Amit Shah as a “murder accused,” which he deemed defamatory and insulting. Rahul Gandhi argued in court that his comments were taken out of context and that he had to visit Sultanpur four times to attend the hearings.

Rahul Calls It a Victory for Truth

Rahul Gandhi hailed the verdict as a victory for truth, asserting that the ruling party had filed baseless cases against him. He did not speak to the media as he exited the court.

This special court had previously dismissed another petition against Rahul Gandhi last year due to lack of solid evidence. That petition was related to a statement concerning the Muzaffarnagar riots, filed by lawyer Mo. Anwar. This court, which handles cases involving MPs and MLAs, has acquitted several leaders in the past, including former minister Om Prakash Singh and MLA Vinod Singh.

Accident During Return Journey

Rahul Gandhi arrived in Lucknow via flight, where he was welcomed by the state Congress president, Aradhana Mishra Mona, who expressed the party’s full confidence in the judiciary. While traveling from Lucknow to Sultanpur, five vehicles from his convoy, along with an ambulance, collided on the Purvanchal Expressway. Some Congress workers sustained minor injuries, but Rahul Gandhi remained unharmed.

Following the verdict, Congress workers in Sultanpur distributed sweets and set off fireworks. They displayed banners proclaiming “Satyamev Jayate” around the court and nearby roads.
