Kota, June 18: At the ‘Students’ Echo’ event held at Dussehra Maidan in Kota, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, engaged with students. He emphasized that this was not a political gathering but a platform to voice the concerns of the youth and students. He stated that the focus of the discussion would solely be on students and their issues.
Gandhi raised critical questions about India’s education system, claiming it puts immense pressure on children, leading to stress. He urged everyone to unite against this system to prevent any child from facing the dire consequences of suicide.
He also highlighted the financial burden families face while preparing for competitive exams. Gandhi claimed that families spend nearly 5 lakh crore rupees on preparations for five major exams, including NEET and JEE, which is equivalent to the budget of five ministries. He criticized the education system for extracting money from students and their families under the guise of education, exams, and employment.
During the event, he questioned why students limit themselves to options like IIT, medical, SSC, or UPSC. Students responded that these were the only paths presented to them from childhood. Gandhi challenged the notion that youth should only aspire to become doctors or engineers when numerous career options exist.
He advocated for an education system that allows children and youth to pursue their interests without incurring exorbitant costs. Gandhi expressed that if students had the freedom to choose their fields, some might want to become dancers, pilots, or pursue other careers.
He also shared a student’s suicide note, asserting that it represented not just an individual failure but a systemic failure in education. He criticized the system for becoming one that pressures youth into despair and unemployment rather than merely selecting candidates.
On the issue of employment, Gandhi remarked that the system has devolved into one that merely collects money. He pointed out that out of a thousand individuals, only a few secure jobs, leaving many young people in uncertainty. He highlighted the alarming number of unemployed engineers and stressed the need for better job opportunities for the youth.
