Washington, April 18 — Former U.S. President Donald Trump has signaled a significant shift in his stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, stating that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is not to blame for the war. Trump also revealed that he is preparing to sign a mineral deal with Ukraine, further highlighting a change in tone regarding the conflict.

Trump’s Comments During Meeting with Italian PM
Speaking alongside Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who is currently on an official visit to the United States, Trump addressed reporters at the White House on Saturday. He expressed dissatisfaction with the ongoing war in Eastern Europe but stopped short of blaming the Ukrainian leadership.
“I don’t hold Zelensky responsible for the war,” Trump said. “That doesn’t mean I’m happy about the situation, but I wouldn’t say he’s to blame.” He also noted that discussions are underway to finalize a mineral production deal with Ukraine, a move that could significantly strengthen economic cooperation between Washington and Kyiv.
Strategic Shift in Rhetoric
Trump’s latest remarks are being seen as particularly significant, given his previously harsh criticism of Zelensky. In past White House briefings, Trump had blamed Zelensky directly for the war, leading to public exchanges of criticism between the two leaders. At one point, Zelensky even invited Trump to visit Ukraine and witness firsthand the devastation caused by Russia’s invasion.
This reversal in Trump’s rhetoric could reflect a strategic pivot as he looks to bolster foreign relations ahead of a potential return to political office.
Mineral Deal in the Works
The mention of a forthcoming mineral deal also signals a deepening of economic engagement between the U.S. and Ukraine. Ukraine holds vast reserves of strategic minerals critical for industries such as energy, electronics, and defense. A U.S.-Ukraine partnership in this sector could serve mutual interests and reduce reliance on adversarial nations for rare earth supplies.
