Village Governance Elections Set for October 24 in Rajasthan

Village Governance Elections Set for October 24 in Rajasthan

Jaipur, October 24: In the first phase of the Panchayati Raj elections, voting will take place on Saturday, October 24, across 3,314 gram panchayats in 16 districts of Rajasthan. Voters will cast their ballots for sarpanch and 28,682 ward panch positions. Polling will be conducted from 7 AM to 6 PM at 9,886 designated voting centers. The counting of votes will commence immediately after polling ends, with results expected to be announced the same day. The competitive landscape became clear following the completion of the nomination process on Friday.

Voting by Ballot Paper, Each Voter Casts Two Votes

The elections for sarpanch and ward panch will utilize ballot papers instead of electronic voting machines (EVMs). Each voter will receive two separate ballot papers: one for the sarpanch and another for the ward panch. Ballot boxes will be placed at polling centers. After 6 PM, the votes for ward panch will be counted first, followed by those for sarpanch. In cases where the competition is tight or a recount is necessary, results may be delayed until late at night.

Barmer Has the Highest Number of Sarpanch Positions

In this first phase, Barmer district has the most sarpanch positions, totaling 419, which accounts for approximately 12.6% of all sarpanch positions in the state. Following Barmer, Bhilwara has 326 sarpanch and 2,872 ward panch positions. Other districts include Phalodi with 305, Udaipur with 284, Dungarpur with 233, and Jaipur with 212 sarpanch positions. The fewest sarpanch positions, 112, are in Bikaner. On average, about 8.7 ward panch will be elected per gram panchayat.

These Elections Are Not Party Symbol-Based

The elections for sarpanch and ward panch are not conducted on a party basis, meaning candidates do not contest under official party symbols. However, local dynamics, social relationships, and the personal influence of candidates often lead to intense competition in villages.

According to the revised schedule from the State Election Commission, the election for the up-sarpanch will take place on Sunday, October 25. The up-sarpanch will be elected by the elected ward panch, and general voters do not participate directly in this election. Voting for district council and panchayat committee members in the first phase has already occurred, with counting set for November 20.
