
Pune, March 7: In a gripping encounter at the 41st PSPB Inter-Unit Hockey Tournament, defending champions Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) secured a narrow 4-3 victory against Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). The match took place at the Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium in Pune, where both BPCL and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) claimed wins in their respective matches on Friday.
With this victory, BPCL now leads the standings with six points from two wins. Meanwhile, IOCL, after their Round 2 match, sits in second place with three points, sharing the spot with ONGC. Engineers India Limited (EIL) has faced two consecutive losses and remains without a point.
In the match, BPCL initially fell behind as Gurjot Singh of ONGC scored a field goal in the 17th minute, making it 1-0. However, BPCL quickly responded with three goals. Varun Kumar, a 2002 Olympic medalist, equalized with a penalty corner goal in the 22nd minute. Following this, 2012 Olympian Tushar Khandekar (37′) and Vishwas Ji (45′) added two more field goals, giving BPCL a 3-1 lead.
ONGC’s Jagwant Singh (52′) reduced the deficit, but India’s current international Rajinder Singh (56′) scored again for BPCL, extending their lead to 4-2. In a dramatic finish, ONGC’s Bikash Toppo (59′) netted another goal, bringing the score to 4-3.
In the day’s second match, IOCL defeated EIL 2-0, with goals from Roshan Minz (14′) and Sunil Yadav (54′), ensuring IOCL took home all three points.
