Ashok Gehlot Hits Back at BJP Leaders Over Refinery Controversy

Jaipur, April 12: The political landscape in Rajasthan has intensified with renewed discussions surrounding the refinery project. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot sharply countered allegations from BJP leaders, stating that those lacking fundamental knowledge about the refinery are being allowed to hold press conferences. He emphasized that speeches are being made without understanding the benefits of a petrochemical complex, leading to unnecessary attacks against him.

Gehlot asserted that only former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has the real authority to comment on the refinery project, as she is well-acquainted with its actual status and the terms of the agreements. He claimed that if there were any shortcomings or errors, only Raje could provide accurate information. Gehlot accused the current government of deliberately stalling the project for four years and now, under electoral pressure, arranging an inauguration event with the Prime Minister.

He also highlighted that the project was initiated during his tenure under Congress leadership, with Sonia Gandhi and then Union Minister Veerappa Moily laying the foundation stone. Gehlot expressed concern over the project’s escalating costs, noting that what was initially a ₹37,000 crore project has now ballooned to nearly ₹80,000 crore, a burden that will ultimately fall on the public.

In a critique of Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, Gehlot stated that the Chief Minister should understand the real challenges faced by farmers. He pointed out that farmers toil for months, only to have their crops destroyed by natural disasters, making light comments about their plight inappropriate. Gehlot urged the Chief Minister to utilize his experience effectively and provide balanced statements on sensitive issues.

This entire episode has once again made the refinery project a significant topic in state politics, intensifying the exchange of accusations between the ruling party and the opposition.
