Political Battle Over Refinery Project Heats Up in Rajasthan

Barmer, April 20: The political landscape in Rajasthan is becoming increasingly charged over the ambitious refinery project. BJP state president Madan Rathore has sharply criticized former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot‘s statements, labeling them as misleading and factually incorrect. Rathore accused Gehlot of attempting to hide his administration’s failures, stating that the project was stalled for years due to slow progress, unclear policies, and poor decisions during Gehlot’s tenure, leading to significant cost overruns and financial losses for the state.

Rathore further alleged that the Congress government failed to establish a clear financial model for the refinery project and did not make timely decisions. This lack of clarity resulted in confusion among investors and hindered the project’s advancement. He emphasized that the current BJP government has accelerated the project through transparent policies and decisive actions, which are expected to yield real benefits for the state.

He also pointed out that under the previous agreement, the Rajasthan government was obligated to pay ₹3,736 crore annually without interest to the associated company for 15 years, a deal detrimental to the state’s interests. Since taking office, the BJP government has made significant improvements to this agreement, ensuring savings of nearly ₹40,000 crore by reducing this financial burden.

Rathore questioned the Congress party’s approach, stating that merely making announcements and laying foundation stones does not complete projects. According to him, by 2013, neither land acquisition nor environmental approvals had been finalized, preventing any substantial work from commencing on the project. The BJP government has systematically addressed these obstacles to advance the project.

He noted that the state’s financial contribution has now been capped at approximately ₹16,845 crore, alleviating pressure on state resources. Rathore believes that the project will create new employment opportunities, predicting that while initially 10,000 to 30,000 jobs were expected, now around 90,000 direct and indirect jobs are anticipated.

The BJP president reiterated that the government’s priority is not just to complete the project but also to create jobs for youth and promote local industries. He advised Gehlot to engage in self-reflection, asserting that the BJP bases its arguments on facts and research regarding every issue.
