Jaipur, April 28: Political rhetoric in Rajasthan has taken a new turn following a controversial remark made by BJP state in-charge Radha Mohan Das Agarwal. He referred to Congress leader and Tonk MLA Sachin Pilot as a ‘bahrupiya’ (imposter) and questioned his loyalty, escalating political tensions. Notably, the Congress party, which has been grappling with internal factionalism, appears united on this issue.
Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra, former minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas, and ex-MLA Divya Maderna, among others, have condemned Agarwal’s statement as inappropriate and disrespectful, demanding a public apology.
Dotasra criticized the BJP, stating that while ideological differences are common in politics, personal attacks have become a hallmark of the BJP’s culture. He emphasized, “Democratic values are being undermined. The BJP leadership must pay attention to the conduct of its officials, or the public will not forgive them.”
In a sharp rebuttal, former minister Khachariyawas remarked that Agarwal is not well-known in Rajasthan, even among his own party members. He asserted that political battles should focus on ideas rather than personal attacks.
Congress leader Divya Maderna described Agarwal’s comments as indicative of narrow-mindedness. She accused the BJP of diverting attention from public issues through personal attacks and questioned the silence of the BJP’s top leadership, suggesting it amounts to tacit support.
Political analysts believe that Agarwal’s characterization of Sachin Pilot as an ‘outsider’ from Uttar Pradesh could become a new political issue for Congress. They are preparing to frame it as a battle of ‘Rajasthani pride versus outsiders.’
Interestingly, leaders like Ashok Gehlot, Sachin Pilot, and Dotasra are appearing together, signaling that Congress may set aside its internal divisions to turn BJP’s personal attacks into a significant electoral issue ahead of upcoming elections and by-elections. It remains to be seen whether the BJP will clarify its stance on this controversy or if Congress will successfully leverage it politically.
