New Delhi, April 27: Arvind Kejriwal, the national president of the Aam Aadmi Party and former Chief Minister of Delhi, has made a significant decision regarding his legal battles. In an emotional letter addressed to Justice Swarnakanta Sharma of the Delhi High Court, Kejriwal announced that he will no longer appear in court, either personally or through his lawyer.
In a video message shared on social media, Kejriwal expressed deep disappointment with the judiciary, stating, “My hope for justice from Justice Swarnakanta has completely shattered.” He emphasized that, in light of this situation, he has chosen to heed the voice of his conscience and take a bold step forward.
Kejriwal noted that with no sign of relief in the legal corridors, he has decided to follow the path of ‘Satyagraha’ as advocated by Mahatma Gandhi. This declaration has stirred both political and judicial circles.
Political analysts view this move as a form of silent protest against the court proceedings. The letter clearly indicates that Kejriwal will not participate in the ongoing hearings before Justice Swarnakanta. However, he clarified that he is not relinquishing his legal rights. In his letter, he stated that he reserves the constitutional right to appeal any decision made by Justice Swarnakanta in the Supreme Court. This indicates that while he is distancing himself from the current court proceedings, he intends to continue his legal fight.
It is noteworthy that the Delhi High Court had previously made critical remarks regarding Kejriwal’s arrest and remand in relation to a liquor policy case, which had caused discontent within the Aam Aadmi Party leadership. In his letter, Kejriwal referenced Gandhi’s Satyagraha multiple times, suggesting that he no longer wishes to confine this struggle to the courts but aims to elevate it to the public arena and moral grounds.
Sources within the Aam Aadmi Party claim that Kejriwal is being deliberately targeted and that he is not receiving the expected relief from the courts. Meanwhile, the BJP has labeled this as a strategy to exert pressure on the judiciary. All eyes are now on how the Delhi High Court will respond to this letter and the former Chief Minister’s stance. For now, Kejriwal’s declaration of “Satyagraha” has given a new ideological direction to the ongoing legal battle concerning Delhi’s liquor policy.
