Kota, June 17: Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi interacted with students during the ‘Voice of Students’ event held at Dussehra Maidan in Kota. He emphasized that this was not a political gathering but a platform to amplify the voices of youth and students. The focus was solely on discussing the concerns of students and young people present.
Gandhi strongly criticized the education system, stating that it places undue pressure on children, causing them significant stress. He remarked that the current system stifles and crushes the potential of children, which is detrimental to the future of the nation. He urged everyone to unite against this oppressive system to prevent any child from facing situations that could lead to tragic outcomes.
During the event, Gandhi questioned why young people have limited career options in education. He pointed out that many children aspire solely to become doctors or engineers, despite the existence of numerous other career paths. He engaged with students, asking them what they would choose to be if given complete freedom. One student expressed a passion for dancing, while another shared a desire to become a doctor, motivated by a personal tragedy involving a family member.
Gandhi referenced competitive exams like NEET, JEE, and UPSC, noting that millions of students participate, yet only a few are selected. He highlighted the financial burden on parents who invest heavily in their children’s education, only to see the system reject many of them. He described the education system as cruel, transforming from a selection process into a rejection process.
With around 3,000 students in attendance, Gandhi pointed out the need to consider the future and mental well-being of those who do not succeed in these exams. He warned that we are pushing our future generations toward depression, a serious concern that needs addressing.
During the dialogue, he spoke with Bhavna Mahawar, a UPSC aspirant, and her parents, Naresh and Parvati Mahawar. Parvati expressed her concerns about the current system’s failures and the stress it places on children. She shared that parents often check on their children multiple times at night to ensure their safety, fearing they might take drastic actions. She called for solutions to this pressing issue.
Gandhi also displayed a suicide note from a student, stating that it reflects not just one individual’s failure but the systemic failures of our education system. The event included discussions with students preparing for NEET, IIT, and UPSC, addressing their studies, career choices, family expenses, and future worries.
