Supreme Court Grants Abhishek Banerjee Permission for Three-Week Medical Trip Abroad

New Delhi, August 11: The Supreme Court has granted permission to Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee to travel abroad for three weeks for eye treatment. During the hearing on Monday, the court emphasized that individuals have the right to choose their preferred medical treatment and travel abroad for it.

A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud was hearing Banerjee’s petition. He had challenged a Calcutta High Court order that denied him relief regarding a travel ban.

Request for Medical Treatment Abroad
Banerjee’s counsel argued in the Supreme Court that he needed to go abroad for eye-related treatment. He sought permission for a three-week trip for this purpose. The apex court linked the right to medical treatment options to personal rights and granted him permission to travel.

Appeal Against High Court Order
The case had previously reached the Calcutta High Court, where Banerjee did not receive relief regarding his travel restrictions. Following this, he approached the Supreme Court for intervention.

After considering the circumstances, the Supreme Court’s three-judge bench allowed him to travel abroad for three weeks for his eye treatment.

The Right to Choose Medical Treatment
During the proceedings, the Supreme Court made a significant remark, stating that every individual has the right to travel abroad and choose medical treatment according to their preference. This comment is viewed as crucial in the context of personal freedom and medical choices.
