Jaipur, August 10: During the Congress ‘Hisab Mango Rally’ in Jaipur on Monday, clashes erupted between party activists and police. To prevent the protesters from advancing, police deployed water cannons. In the chaos, a female Congress worker fainted and required assistance from those nearby.
Congress leaders, officials, and activists marched from Nehru Palace on Tonk Road towards the Jaipur Municipal Corporation headquarters. A significant number of participants raised slogans against the municipal administration.
As the rally approached the municipal headquarters, police set up barricades to halt the activists. When Congress workers attempted to push forward, a scuffle ensued between them and the police. To control the situation, law enforcement used water cannons, forcing many activists to retreat. During this altercation, one female worker was injured and lost consciousness.
The Congress activists were protesting against the municipal corporation’s functioning, claiming that the city’s sanitation system is in disarray. They highlighted issues such as garbage accumulation, waterlogging, and blocked sewers in various areas. Additionally, they expressed dissatisfaction over broken roads and non-functional streetlights. Party leaders stated that complaints regarding the city’s fundamental problems have been consistently raised, yet timely solutions remain elusive.
This demonstration was part of the ‘Hisab Mango’ campaign. Congress leaders and activists demanded accountability from the municipal corporation regarding development projects and the status of essential services in the city.
A significant police presence was noted during the protest. Attempts to breach the barricades led to several confrontations, prompting police to manage the crowd. Former minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas climbed onto a barricade, sharply criticizing the BJP government. He remarked, “Even in the Chief Minister’s constituency, roads are in poor condition. The situation worsens after rainfall, reflecting the state of the entire city.”
Khachariyawas warned that if the issues of sanitation and waterlogging are not resolved promptly, Congress will escalate its protests. “No matter how many police are deployed or barricades erected, the voice of the people cannot be silenced. The fight for the people’s rights will continue from the streets to the assembly,” he asserted.
He added, “We will respond to bullets with bullets, and to batons with batons.” The protest saw the presence of several Congress leaders, including state president Govind Singh Dotasra, opposition leader Tikaram Julie, and Jaipur city Congress president Sunil Sharma, among many others.
