Jaipur, August 20: During the monsoon session of the Rajasthan Assembly, opposition leader Tikaram Julie launched a fierce attack on the state government and the Education Minister. Julie stated that while Congress aims to conduct the assembly proceedings smoothly, legislators were barred from entering the assembly. He labeled this as a serious issue and announced that Congress would issue a notice for breach of privilege regarding this matter.
Julie mentioned that just a day prior, he had assured during an all-party meeting that the assembly’s functioning would proceed without interruptions. Despite this, the gate that legislators have used for years was closed.
Julie Questions: Why Were We Stopped?
The opposition leader revealed that Congress legislators visited the Poddar School for the Deaf but were denied entry after being shown a notice. Subsequently, they marched on foot to the assembly, only to be halted again. Julie questioned why they were obstructed at the assembly entrance when they were there to participate in the proceedings. He affirmed that Congress would raise this issue within the assembly as well.
Targeting the Government with ‘Cover-Up Law’
Julie criticized the government’s regulations concerning media access to schools, claiming that the BJP introduced such laws to conceal its alleged wrongdoings. He referred to it as the ‘Cover-Up Law’ and demanded its withdrawal, alleging that the government is trying to prevent the real conditions of government schools from coming to light.
Highlighting Dilapidated Schools and Vacant Positions
Julie made several serious claims regarding the state’s education system. He stated that 3,768 schools had been declared dilapidated, yet none have been fully repaired. He claimed that approximately 85,000 classrooms in government schools are in a state of disrepair, with no repairs or reconstruction undertaken. Julie also alleged that around 125,000 teaching positions in the education department remain vacant, and nearly 900,000 students have left government schools in the past three years.
Reference to Piploadi School Tragedy
Julie brought up the tragic incident at Piploadi School, where seven children lost their lives due to a building collapse. He questioned why the government has not been held accountable for such grave incidents and the deteriorating condition of schools.
Attacking the Education Minister’s Personal Statements
Julie referenced previous statements made by the Education Minister, questioning his approach. He noted that comments have been made about female teachers’ attire, inspections of women’s mobile phones, and statements regarding the DNA testing of tribal people. Julie sarcastically asked, “Is this an education minister or a joke?”
Defending the Congress Government’s Tenure
When asked about the longstanding issues in government schools, Julie dismissed the argument that these problems persisted during the Congress government’s time. He asserted that the Congress government had improved education standards through the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, built school buildings, and enhanced facilities. He accused the current government of failing to allocate sufficient budget for repairs and infrastructure, leading to the worsening conditions.
The aggressive stance of Congress regarding the education system on the first day of the monsoon session indicates that this issue may become a significant point of contention between the government and opposition in the days to come.
