New Delhi, October 3: In a significant organizational shift ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Punjab, MP Amarinder Singh Raja Wading formally submitted his resignation as the state Congress president to Rahul Gandhi on Friday, October 2. Speaking to the media after their meeting, Wading stated that no one asked for his resignation; rather, he made the decision to step down himself. He emphasized his commitment to remain available for the party in the future.
Wading elaborated on the current political situation in Punjab, the challenges facing Congress, and future strategies during his discussion with Rahul Gandhi. He shared insights from his nearly four-and-a-half years of experience as state president, highlighting the party’s strengths and the challenges that need to be addressed.
Reflecting on his tenure, Wading expressed gratitude to Rahul Gandhi for entrusting him with the presidency during challenging times. He acknowledged that reaching a position of leadership is an achievement, but no one remains in such a role indefinitely. He assured Gandhi that he would stand by the party wherever needed in the future.
When questioned about the circumstances surrounding his resignation, Wading clarified that no one requested his resignation. He noted that during leadership transitions in Congress, it is customary to issue a letter expressing gratitude to the outgoing president. He also mentioned that he feels it is time for a short break.
Regarding Sachin Pilot, the in-charge of Punjab Congress, Wading speculated that Pilot might have felt it was time for a change in leadership. However, he clarified that he does not have definitive information on this matter, and his comments should not be interpreted as confirmation of Pilot’s role.
Wading also mentioned his limited interactions with Pilot, recalling a meeting during a birthday celebration in Delhi and spending about two hours together during a protest in Chandigarh. He reiterated that despite stepping down from the presidency, his commitment to the party remains steadfast.
