What Is Identity Check?

Identity Check is a next-gen anti-theft security layer designed to protect user data on stolen devices. Unlike standard biometric authentication prompts that allow PIN or password fallback, Identity Check requires biometric input only—such as a fingerprint or facial recognition—with no option to use a PIN or password as a backup.

Why It Matters

In traditional theft scenarios, attackers can often bypass device security using stolen credentials or guessed PINs. Identity Check removes that loophole, ensuring that without a fingerprint or face scan:

Critical system settings cannot be altered
Saved passwords and sensitive data remain inaccessible

This feature is specifically designed to delay or completely block access in the event of device theft—unless a user is forced to comply physically, which transitions from theft to a more serious criminal issue.

Google Pixel: Received Identity Check via Feature Drop in December 2024
Samsung Devices: Implemented within One UI 7 (Android 15)
All Other OEMs: Will gain access with Android 16 rollout in late 2025

Due to the technical requirements—including a full rewrite of biometric authentication logic—this feature must be integrated at the OS level, which is why it can’t be added via app or Play Services updates.
