Jaipur, June 28: Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has launched a strong attack on the BJP regarding the Kanhiya Lal murder case in Udaipur. He alleged that nearly four years have passed since the incident, yet the victim’s family has not received justice. Gehlot stated that the BJP has exploited this sensitive case solely for electoral gains, showing little seriousness in ensuring punishment for the culprits.
Gehlot expressed his concerns on the social media platform X, stating that as the four-year mark approaches for the brutal murder of Kanhiya Lal, the BJP’s “double engine” government still leaves justice unfulfilled. He suggested that this situation appears to be not just negligence but a calculated conspiracy, especially given the questions raised about the criminals’ connections to the BJP.
Only 21 Witnesses Testified Out of 180
Gehlot noted that the investigation is under the National Investigation Agency (NIA), with hearings taking place in a special NIA court. Despite both the central and state governments being under BJP control, only 21 out of 180 witnesses have testified so far. He questioned why the judicial process is so sluggish when both the investigative agency and the government have ample resources.
The former Chief Minister remarked that during election time, the BJP made grand claims regarding this case, promoting issues like “5 lakh versus 50 lakh.” He accused the BJP of never intending to deliver justice to the victim’s family, instead using the incident for political advantage.
Targeting PM Modi and Amit Shah
Gehlot also directed his criticism at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. He pointed out that after using the incident for political gains, they fail to mention Kanhiya Lal when they visit Rajasthan, let alone discuss justice for him.
He urged the people of Rajasthan to recognize the true character of the BJP, accusing the party of playing with public sentiments and turning a sensitive incident into an electoral issue.
What Happened in the Kanhiya Lal Murder Case?
The Kanhiya Lal murder occurred on June 28, 2022, in Udaipur, where tailor Kanhiya Lal was brutally killed in his shop. Reports indicated that he had received threats after posting support for the controversial remarks made by suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma on social media.
The assailants recorded the incident and shared the video online, sparking outrage across the country. Following the incident, communal tensions arose in Rajasthan, which was then governed by the Congress party led by Ashok Gehlot.
Investigation Handed Over to NIA
In response to the gravity of the incident and potential terrorist connections, the Rajasthan police swiftly arrested the two main accused. The investigation was subsequently transferred to the NIA, and the case has since been under consideration in a special NIA court.
Gehlot emphasized that it is natural to question the slow pace of justice in a case that the BJP had made a significant electoral issue. He has called on both the central and state governments to take effective steps to ensure swift justice for the victim’s family.
Political Rhetoric Intensifies
Following Gehlot’s statements regarding the Kanhiya Lal murder case, political accusations may once again escalate in Rajasthan. The Congress party is linking this to the BJP’s discrepancies between their words and actions, while a counterattack from the BJP on this issue is also anticipated.
Currently, the case is under judicial review, and a final decision will emerge only after the court proceedings conclude. However, Gehlot’s remarks have once again placed this sensitive matter at the center of political debate.
