Jaipur, June 26: Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot commented on the recent meeting at 10 Janpath with Sonia Gandhi, stating that the media should not seek any significant political implications from it. He clarified that it was a routine meeting related to the Rajiv Gandhi National Relief and Welfare Society.
Gehlot emphasized that all trustees were invited and that the meeting was entirely non-political and institutional. He urged that it should not be linked to the Rajasthan Congress organization or any political speculation.
Reflecting on Rahul Gandhi‘s two-year tenure as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gehlot remarked that Gandhi has made a lasting impact on the country’s politics. He noted that Gandhi has effectively raised public issues both inside and outside Parliament and has fulfilled the responsibilities of the opposition effectively.
Gehlot praised Gandhi’s historic debut in the House, mentioning that it was unprecedented for the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and several senior ministers to stand up during his speech. He highlighted that Gandhi consistently addresses issues related to farmers, laborers, and the overall development of the country.
The former Chief Minister stated that Gandhi persistently brings the government’s policies and shortcomings to light. He is amplifying the voice of the people both inside and outside the House. Gehlot stressed that the true responsibility of the opposition is to present the sentiments, problems, and expectations of the public to the ruling party, a duty that Gandhi has been successfully executing.
Gehlot also noted that outside Parliament, leaders of the INDIA alliance are actively protesting on public issues. Recently, Gandhi initiated a significant movement regarding the NEET examination across the nation. Gehlot described Gandhi’s two-year term as Leader of the Opposition as remarkable and historic.
On the topic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Rajasthan, Gehlot mentioned that he has learned that Modi will hold a meeting within the Barmer refinery rather than conducting a large public gathering. Gehlot suggested that the Prime Minister should hold a significant public assembly, as the Barmer refinery is a crucial project for Rajasthan’s development.
He recalled that when oil was discovered in Rajasthan, the Congress government persistently urged the central government for support. Thanks to the efforts of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi, the refinery company was established through the collaboration of HPCL and the Rajasthan government. Gehlot emphasized the project’s importance for the state’s development.
He criticized the BJP government, demanding an explanation for the delays in the refinery project during their previous term, which caused the project’s cost to escalate from ₹37,000 crores to over ₹80,000 crores. Gehlot stated that the public has yet to receive answers regarding this financial loss.
Responding to allegations made by Dr. Kirori Lal Meena, Gehlot reiterated his previous statements on social media, asserting that Meena, a senior BJP leader, has a history of making baseless accusations against various individuals.
Gehlot insisted that if there are allegations, they should be backed by evidence and facts. He emphasized that making accusations without proof is not appropriate political conduct.
In defense of Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra, Gehlot stated that Dotasra is a respected leader and former minister. He accused those targeting Dotasra of attempting a calculated political conspiracy to damage the reputation of the entire Congress party.
