Jodhpur, August 2: Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot addressed Congress leaders and workers at a conference in Jodhpur, emphasizing the importance of discipline and unity within the party. He advised attendees to refrain from personal slogans and instead focus on winning for the party.
Gehlot spoke at the Congress worker conference held at Oswal Bhawan. Upon his arrival, supporters chanted slogans for a “fourth Gehlot government.” He advised them against such chants, stating that the focus should be on the party’s success rather than individual leaders.
“Do not chant for a fourth term for Ashok Gehlot. When I first became Chief Minister, there were no slogans. I traveled from village to village and accomplished much,” he said. Gehlot highlighted that serving as Chief Minister three times is a significant responsibility and achievement. He urged party workers to strengthen Congress and secure electoral victories.
He clarified that the decision on who becomes Chief Minister is made by the party high command, considering public opinion, the views of elected legislators, and the political landscape. Gehlot stressed that workers should not engage in disputes over the Chief Minister position, as personal slogans could send the wrong message and disrupt organizational unity.
“The decision of who should be Chief Minister is not our job. It is made by the high command after considering various factors, including public and legislative opinions,” he stated.
Gehlot also noted that upon arriving at Jodhpur Railway Station, supporters shouted slogans in his favor. During a meeting with former Assembly Speaker Sumitra Singh, supporters again expressed their desire for him to serve a fourth term. He reiterated that discussions about future terms should be left to party leadership, and the focus should be on strengthening the organization.
He recalled that Sonia Gandhi appointed him as Chief Minister without any demands from him, and at that time, there were no slogans for a second, third, or fourth term. Gehlot has been active in politics for nearly 52 years, starting from his journey with the NSUI. He expressed satisfaction with his political journey.
He acknowledged the trust placed in him by Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi, stating that despite Congress leading in 21 seats in the last Assembly elections, the party leadership entrusted him with the Chief Minister’s responsibilities.
Gehlot emphasized the need for unity among Congress workers, urging them to rise above personal ambitions and factionalism. He believes that only through collective effort can a strong political message be conveyed to the public. His remarks about avoiding personal slogans and maintaining organizational integrity are seen as a response to ongoing internal dynamics within the Congress party, although he did not name any specific leaders during his address.
