Patna, Bihar: The monsoon has fully arrived in Bihar, bringing both relief from the heat and a new wave of challenges. With continuous rainfall reported across the state, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for 23 districts, warning residents to remain cautious amid the risk of flooding and lightning strikes.

Monsoon Gains Strength Across Bihar
With clouds blanketing most regions and temperatures dipping slightly, residents have seen a noticeable shift in weather conditions. However, widespread waterlogging due to heavy rainfall has disrupted normal life in various parts of the state, especially in urban pockets like Patna.
According to the IMD, the state is set to witness a week-long spell of thunderstorms and heavy rain, increasing the risk of lightning-related incidents and flash floods.
Districts Under Heavy Rain Alert
The IMD has identified the following districts as high-risk zones for heavy rain and thunderstorms:
-
Kaimur, Buxar, Rohtas, Aurangabad – Forecast includes heavy rain and thunder
-
Gaya, Araria, Kishanganj – Moderate to heavy rainfall expected
-
Nalanda, West Champaran, Saran, Siwan – Thunderstorm alerts issued
-
Patna – Heavy rain forecast with thunder; yellow alert in effect
These alerts are part of a broader yellow warning issued across several districts to encourage preparedness and caution among residents.
Tragic Incident in Patna
Heavy rains lashed Patna on Wednesday and Thursday, leading to traffic snarls, waterlogged roads, and power outages. A tragic incident occurred in Girwari Tola village of Bikram block, where Sudama Prasad died due to a lightning strike. Two others, including a woman, were seriously injured with severe burns.
Broader Weather Outlook: Other States Affected
The IMD has also extended heavy rainfall alerts to other Indian states, including:
-
South India: Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra
-
Northeast India: Manipur, Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Tripura
These states are likely to experience significant monsoon activity, which could lead to similar weather-related disruptions and safety concerns.
Advisory for Residents
The Meteorological Department has advised citizens, especially in the affected districts, to:
-
Avoid unnecessary travel during thunderstorms
-
Stay indoors during lightning activity
-
Refrain from taking shelter under trees or isolated structures
-
Follow local administration advisories for flood-prone areas
As the monsoon intensifies, timely weather updates and precautionary actions will be critical in preventing further loss of life and property.
