Mumbai, June 30: The case of Reshu Gupta, a momos vendor who suffered severe burns from boiling water during a VIP convoy clearance in Jaipur’s Jagatpura area, has sparked discussions not only in Rajasthan but also across Uttar Pradesh. Various organizations in Uttar Pradesh have begun to raise their voices in support of Gupta, who originally hails from Ambedkar Nagar district in Uttar Pradesh. After her father’s death, she moved to Jaipur with her sister to earn a living.
In response to the incident, the ‘National Organization of Street Vendors’ based in Uttar Pradesh has taken an active stance. They have sent letters to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the National Commission for Women, and the Uttar Pradesh State Commission for Women, highlighting Gupta’s family and economic circumstances.
The letter emphasizes that Gupta, a native of Ambedkar Nagar, became the family’s breadwinner after her father, Lal Bahadur Gupta, passed away in 2020. This tragic event forced her to seek employment in Jaipur alongside her sister.
The organization is urging the National Commission for Women and the Uttar Pradesh State Commission for Women to take immediate cognizance of this incident. They argue that this case is not merely about an accident or negligence but is deeply connected to the safety, dignity, and livelihoods of women working in the informal sector.
The letter calls for the women’s commission to take appropriate measures regarding Gupta’s safety, treatment, rehabilitation, and future employment. The organization stresses that women like Reshu Gupta work hard under adverse conditions to support their families, and it is crucial for the government and institutions to stand by them.
Additionally, the letter addresses the issue of employment migration from Uttar Pradesh. It requests that Gupta be provided with a designated vending zone in a major city in Uttar Pradesh, considering her family circumstances. This would offer her a dignified and secure job opportunity while allowing her to live safely in her home state.
The organization also advocates for the development of more organized vending zones within Uttar Pradesh to prevent migration. They believe that if local, safe, and structured job opportunities are available, impoverished citizens will not be compelled to seek livelihoods in other states.
The case of Reshu Gupta highlights the struggles faced by countless young individuals who are forced to leave their homes to work in the informal sector due to family responsibilities.
Following the incident in Jagatpura, there has been a growing demand for justice and rehabilitation for Reshu Gupta. Local discontent has surfaced, and with organizations from Uttar Pradesh now involved, the issue has become a topic of social and administrative discourse across two states.
Organizations are insisting that the matter should not be resolved merely through financial assistance. Instead, they call for a permanent solution that ensures Gupta’s safety, rehabilitation, and dignified employment.
