Opposition Leader Questions Validity of Yamuna Water Agreement

Jaipur, June 29: Rajasthan’s Leader of the Opposition, Tikaram Julie, has raised serious concerns regarding the recently signed Yamuna water agreement. While welcoming the agreement, he criticized the BJP government’s intentions and its actual implementation. Julie highlighted that the people of the state are desperate for water, yet the government seems to be engaged only in political maneuvering with paper agreements.

Julie accused the government of repeatedly signing MOUs and MOAs over the past two and a half years without any tangible progress on the ground. He stated that if the government is genuinely serious, it should transparently present the Detailed Project Report (DPR), budget, timeline, and funding sources to the public.

He pointed out that Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma had previously claimed that the DPR for this project would be ready in just four months. Julie questioned the whereabouts of the DPR after two and a half years.

The opposition leader noted that while the government continues to sign MOUs and MOAs, no real work has been accomplished. He described this as a betrayal of the public, asserting that mere announcements and programs are insufficient for such a critical issue as water.

Julie also questioned the stance of the Haryana government, stating that the foundation of the agreement appears weak. He referred to Haryana’s Chief Minister’s earlier comments, indicating that Rajasthan would only receive surplus water from the Yamuna.

He raised concerns about the availability of additional water from the Yamuna, questioning what Rajasthan’s parched regions would receive. Julie demanded clarity from the government on how water would be reliably and timely provided to Rajasthan under this agreement.

Furthermore, he scrutinized the financial management of the project, which is estimated to cost around ₹33,000 crores. Julie emphasized that the government has yet to clarify where such a substantial amount of funding would come from.

He expressed confusion over how such a large project could be completed without a budget, funding sources, or a clear roadmap. Julie urged the government to inform the public whether the state or central government would provide the funds or if another financial model would be adopted.

Julie insisted that the people of Rajasthan deserve more than just announcements; they need actual water. He called on the government to clarify when Yamuna water would reach Rajasthan, which districts would benefit, and what the phased implementation plan would be.

He stated that if the government’s intentions are genuine, it should disclose the DPR, financial approvals, land acquisition, tender processes, and construction timelines. Julie concluded by asserting that misleading the public in the name of water is unacceptable.

He accused the BJP government of engaging in paper politics, promoting the Yamuna water agreement as a political achievement while the reality remains that the plan is still on paper. He noted that the people in water-scarce regions, including Shekhawati, have long awaited relief but are met only with announcements.

Julie clarified that the Congress does not oppose the agreement but insists that the government must be honest and transparent in its implementation. He emphasized that this issue, which directly affects Rajasthan’s interests, requires concrete results rather than political games.
