Kolkata, June 29 — A fresh spell of intense monsoon activity is expected to impact large parts of West Bengal over the next few days, as a new cyclonic circulation has formed over the northwestern Bay of Bengal, near the coastal regions of INDIA and Bangladesh. The system is likely to intensify into a low-pressure area within the next 48 hours, according to the Alipore Meteorological Department.

Coastal and Southern Bengal to Bear the Brunt
The Met Department has warned of widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall especially in southern and western districts of West Bengal. Although some parts of the state witnessed early morning sunshine on Sunday, thick cloud cover and high humidity levels are expected to persist throughout the day, accompanied by light to moderate showers and gusty winds.
The districts of South 24 Parganas, East Medinipur, West Medinipur, Jhargram, Purulia, and Bankura are under a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall, while Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, and Kolkata are expected to receive significant downpours between Sunday and Tuesday.
Impact Beyond Bengal: System Could Move Towards Central India
The weather system, currently influenced by a trough line extending from Bangladesh to Madhya Pradesh, is expected to affect not just West Bengal but also parts of Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh. This trough, combined with another weather system stretching from the Arabian Sea across Chhattisgarh to Madhya Pradesh, is likely to enhance cyclonic activity in eastern and central India.
Northern Bengal districts are also expected to receive scattered heavy rainfall, while the rest of the state may witness light to moderate showers with thunderstorms and lightning. Winds are likely to blow at speeds of 30 to 45 km/h, potentially disrupting local transport and daily life.
Orange Alert Issued Until June 30
The IMD has issued an orange alert for multiple districts of West Bengal through June 30, warning of possible waterlogging, road traffic disruptions, and impacts to daily routines. Kolkata is forecasted to have overcast skies throughout the day with temperatures ranging from 27°C (min) to 31°C (max).
Strong Monsoon System in Place
Weather experts confirm that a strong monsoonal setup is currently active over the region. The cyclonic system is likely to travel across Odisha, West Bengal, and Jharkhand, reaching central Madhya Pradesh in the coming days. With back-to-back systems active, eastern India is likely to experience prolonged heavy rains and gusty winds over the next 72 hours.
Residents across the affected districts are advised to stay updated with official weather alerts and avoid low-lying or flood-prone areas during periods of intense rainfall.
