New Delhi, June 8: The India Alliance held its seventh meeting on Monday after a two-year hiatus, with leaders from 25 political parties in attendance. The gathering took place in the national capital, where several prominent opposition leaders participated, while others joined virtually. Among those attending were Maharashtra leader Uddhav Thackeray and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who connected online. Notable figures such as Congress Parliamentary Party President Sonia Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) leader Supriya Sule, and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal were also present.
During a press conference following the meeting, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced that consensus was reached on five major issues after over two hours of discussion. He accused the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) controversy and alleged irregularities of jeopardizing the futures of millions of youth in the country. Kharge stated that the moral responsibility for the NEET and CBSE-related controversies lies with the Union Education Minister, who should resign immediately.
Kharge emphasized that the India Alliance will consistently address issues such as inflation, unemployment, and the country’s economic situation. The coalition has decided to hold regular meetings every two months to formulate a joint strategy to challenge the government on these matters. He mentioned that opposition parties will jointly campaign on issues affecting the general public.
The meeting also discussed the transparency of the electoral process and the revision of voter lists (SIR). The alliance expressed concerns about the fairness of elections and decided to write a letter to the Chief Justice of India. Opposition leaders believe it is essential to ensure the integrity of democratic institutions and the credibility of the electoral process.
Kharge announced that the next meeting of the India Alliance will be held on August 8 in Hyderabad. Additionally, opposition parties will continue to meet during the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament to prepare a unified strategy. Political analysts consider this meeting crucial for opposition parties following the Lok Sabha elections, as it outlines their upcoming political and parliamentary strategies.
