The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former Saurashtra batsman Sitanshu Kotak as the batting coach for the Indian team ahead of the limited-overs series against England. The decision comes as the team gears up for five T20Is and three ODIs, set to begin on January 22, followed by the Champions Trophy.

A Seasoned Coach with Proven Expertise
At 52, Sitanshu Kotak brings a wealth of experience to the role. A Level-3 certified coach, Kotak has been an integral part of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for several years, working closely with senior and India A teams during various tours. Known for his technical acumen, Kotak has also served as an assistant coach to VVS Laxman at the NCA and coached India during their Ireland tour last year.
In domestic cricket, Kotak has an impressive record, amassing over 8,000 runs with 15 centuries, making him a dependable guide for the Indian batters.
Challenges Addressed
The decision to appoint Kotak follows concerns raised during India’s tour of Australia, where several technical flaws in batting were exposed. Prominent players, including Virat Kohli, struggled with deliveries outside the off-stump, leading to recurring dismissals. The BCCI’s senior management expressed dissatisfaction with former assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, whose impact on players was deemed insufficient.
A senior BCCI official commented, “It was clear that players were not receiving the necessary support from Abhishek Nayar. Kotak, on the other hand, has a proven track record, and players trust his guidance.”
Support from Cricketing Legends
The move also aligns with feedback from cricketing icons like Sunil Gavaskar, who publicly criticized the support staff during the Australia series. Gavaskar suggested that coaches should be held accountable for players’ technical issues, especially when star performers like Kohli continue to face similar problems.
Support Staff Composition
Kotak joins a support team comprising South Africa’s former pacer Morne Morkel as the bowling coach and Netherlands’ Ryan ten Doeschate as the fielding coach. Together, they aim to address the gaps exposed in recent matches and prepare the team for upcoming challenges.
