Overpricing at Liquor Stores in Dalot Raises Concerns

Mumbai, April 12: Reports have emerged from Dalot regarding rampant overpricing at liquor stores, attributed to negligence by the Excise Department. Previously, complaints primarily focused on illegal sales after 8 PM. However, customers are now being charged more than the marked prices even during the day.

Investigations reveal that liquor bottles are being sold for 20 to 30 rupees above the Maximum Retail Price (MRP). Additionally, illegal sales continue to occur after designated hours, resulting in revenue losses for the government.

According to regulations, liquor sales are prohibited after certain hours. Yet, many stores are reportedly closing their shutters and selling alcohol at inflated prices inside. In several instances, liquor is hidden away and sold at higher rates.

Customers claim that store operators are employing a “same bottle, new price” tactic, charging new rates even for old stock. New labels are being affixed to bottles, or customers are simply being charged above the MRP.

One customer reported being asked to pay 790 rupees for a bottle marked at 730 rupees at a store on Chandera Road. When he protested, the salesman bluntly stated, “This is the rate; take it or leave it.” In another case, a beer priced at 175 rupees was sold for 190 rupees.

Despite directives from the Excise Department mandating the display of price lists at stores, most outlets lack this information. This absence prevents customers from knowing the correct prices, allowing salespeople to exploit the situation.

From rural areas to towns, there is a blatant disregard for these orders. The absence of departmental action has emboldened liquor contractors. Complaints about overpricing have persisted for years, yet no substantial action has been taken.

This situation raises questions about the role of the Excise Department. Many believe that the ongoing illegal collection is due to the department’s negligence or possible collusion.
