Chennai, April 21: A political storm has erupted between Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Prime Minister Narendra Modi following Kharge’s controversial remarks. During an event, Kharge allegedly referred to PM Modi as a “terrorist,” prompting the BJP to demand an apology. In response to the backlash, Kharge clarified that he did not intend to label Modi personally as a terrorist. Instead, he aimed to highlight the pressure exerted on political parties and individuals through government policies and agencies.
Kharge emphasized that his comments were about how the Prime Minister “intimidates” people and opposition parties, using central agencies like the ED, Income Tax Department, and CBI to create political pressure. He stated that his remarks were meant to convey a sense of “terrorization,” not to directly call the Prime Minister a terrorist. Despite this clarification, the BJP dismissed it as insufficient, arguing that such language undermines democratic norms and insisting that Kharge should publicly apologize.
Notably, Kharge has previously made sharp comments about PM Modi. In 2024, he compared Modi to the historical conqueror Timur, while in 2023, he referred to him as a “poisonous snake” and “leader of liars,” remarks he later clarified. This latest statement has once again intensified the political atmosphere, leading to a flurry of accusations between the two parties.
Political analysts believe that such statements contribute to political polarization in the electoral landscape and raise questions about the decorum of public discourse. It remains to be seen how this controversy will unfold and whether the Congress will take any formal stance on the matter.
