Rajasthan MLA Caught Red-Handed Taking ₹20 Lakh Bribe, First Arrest of Sitting Legislator in State

Jaipur, May 4 — In a historic and unprecedented move, the Rajasthan Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Sunday arrested sitting MLA Jaykrishna Patel from Banswara’s Bagidora constituency while accepting a bribe of ₹20 lakh. This marks the first time in Rajasthan’s history that a legislator has been caught red-handed for accepting a bribe.

Rajasthan MLA Caught Red-Handed

₹2.5 Crore Deal Finalised for Withdrawing Assembly Questions

According to ACB officials, Jaykrishna Patel, who represents the Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP), allegedly demanded ₹10 crore from a private company to withdraw assembly questions related to the mining department. The amount was later negotiated down to ₹2.5 crore.

The bribe was connected to three mining-related questions submitted in the legislative assembly — two starred (questions 5998 and 6284) and one unstarred (question 950) — that had not yet been tabled. ACB officials said the MLA was pressuring the company by repeatedly submitting these questions and threatening action.

Caught on Camera with Forensic Evidence

ACB Director General Dr. Ravi Prakash Meharda confirmed that Patel was caught in a sting operation at his official residence in Jyoti Nagar, Jaipur. A chemical test confirmed the presence of bribe-related substances on his hands. Additionally, video evidence supports the bribe-taking incident.

The trap was laid following a complaint by Ravindra Kumar Meena, who approached the ACB with claims that the MLA was using legislative privileges to demand illicit money. On Sunday afternoon, ACB teams, under the presence of the complainant, conducted a successful sting operation in which the legislator’s aide collected the money and attempted to flee but was caught. Patel and middleman Vijay Kumar were arrested on the spot.

Investigation Expands: Illegal Assets Probe Underway

Dr. Meharda revealed that before the arrest, the Speaker of the Rajasthan Assembly and Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who also holds the Home portfolio, were informed about the operation. ACB Additional Director General Smita Srivastava is leading further searches across various locations linked to the accused. The bureau has also launched an inquiry into possible disproportionate assets owned by Patel.

This case has sent shockwaves across political and bureaucratic circles in Rajasthan and is expected to intensify scrutiny of elected representatives.
