BHOPAL, April 17, 2025 Madhya Pradesh is in the throes of an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring past the 40°C mark in at least nine major cities. As the unseasonal rain and hailstorms subside, the oppressive summer heat has returned in full force, particularly affecting regions like Malwa-Nimar and Gwalior-Chambal.

Heatwave Intensifies Across Central India
With rising mercury levels, residents in cities like Bhopal, Indore, and Ujjain are resorting to umbrellas and face coverings to shield themselves from the blazing sun. On Wednesday, Ratlam recorded the highest temperature in the state at 42.6°C, followed by Narmadapuram (41.6°C), Khandwa (41.5°C), and Shajapur (41.1°C). Ujjain, Dhar, and Guna also reported scorching temperatures between 40.3°C and 40.7°C.
Meteorological forecasts suggest that Bhopal, Gwalior, Jabalpur, and several other regions could see further temperature rises in the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued advisories for people to avoid exposure during peak daytime hours.
Scattered Showers Offer Momentary Relief
Despite the prevailing heat, some regions experienced brief showers. Dhar’s Manawar area witnessed a 30-minute downpour, while isolated rainfall was reported in Pandhurna, Khargone, Balaghat, Seoni, Mandla, Barwani, Burhanpur, and Betul. However, these showers offered little respite from the sweltering conditions dominating the state.
Temperature Drop Expected After April 18
According to the IMD, the ongoing heatwave is expected to continue until at least April 18. A marginal temperature drop of 2–3°C is predicted thereafter, offering slight relief to affected regions. Meanwhile, residents are advised to stay hydrated, minimize outdoor activities, and follow heat-safety protocols.
