Stock Market Opens in Red After Trump’s Tariff Announcement, Sensex Falls 341 Points

New Delhi, April 9 Indian stock markets opened on a negative note on Wednesday, following U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a massive 104% tariff on Chinese imports. This move has triggered a ripple effect across global markets, dragging the Indian indices sharply lower at the start of the trading session.

Sensex and Nifty Slip in Early Trade

At the opening bell, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) benchmark Sensex fell by 340.75 points, or 0.46%, to trade at 73,886.33. Similarly, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty declined by 104.00 points, or 0.46%, and was seen trading at 22,431.85.

Out of the 30 Sensex stocks, 24 were in the red. Major IT and pharma stocks led the decline, with Infosys, HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, Sun Pharma, Tata Steel, and TCS witnessing a fall of up to 3%.

On the Nifty, 42 out of 50 stocks were trading with losses, further reflecting widespread bearish sentiment among investors.

Global Market Pressure Weighs on Indian Equities

Asian markets also remained under pressure in early trade. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index slumped by 3.47%, trading at 31,868. South Korea’s KOSPI dropped 1.19% to 2,306, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index slid 1.55%, trading around 19,815.

This downturn comes just a day after Indian markets posted strong gains. On Tuesday, the Sensex surged 1,135 points (1.55%) to close at 74,273, while the Nifty jumped 374 points (1.69%) to settle at 22,535. However, today’s global cues have reversed the optimism, raising concerns over escalating trade tensions and their impact on global economic growth.

Market Outlook

Analysts suggest that volatility will likely persist throughout the week as global markets digest the implications of Trump’s trade moves. Traders are advised to stay cautious and closely watch developments in U.S.-China trade relations and their subsequent influence on currency, commodities, and equities.
