Successful Treatment of Rare Pagets Disease at Pacific Medical College Hospital

Udaipur, March 20: A 69-year-old woman has regained her mobility thanks to timely diagnosis and effective teamwork at Pacific Medical College Hospital (PMCH).

Timely examinations and accurate diagnosis are crucial for successfully treating complex diseases. A remarkable case at PMCH’s Orthopedics and Endocrinology departments involved a rare condition known as Paget’s disease.

The patient, a resident of Pali, had been suffering from severe bone pain and mobility issues for an extended period. She also had a history of diabetes. After consulting local physicians without any relief, her family brought her to PMCH. There, Dr. Saurabh Gupta from the Endocrinology department conducted tests that revealed she was suffering from Paget’s disease. This rare condition causes bones to become hollow and extremely fragile, increasing the risk of fractures.

Dr. Rohit explained that the patient’s bones had become weak and brittle, leading to a pathological fracture. Such fractures are more challenging to operate on compared to regular fractures due to the extreme delicacy of the bones.

The treatment was carried out in two phases at PMCH. Under Dr. Saurabh Gupta’s leadership, extensive examinations were conducted. It was essential to control the metabolic aspects of the disease before surgery to minimize risks during and after the operation. Dr. Major Rohit Jhamanani and his orthopedic team successfully performed the surgery. Despite the abnormal fragility of the bones caused by Paget’s disease, the team managed to fix the fracture effectively.

Post-surgery, the woman recovered without any complications, thanks to the diligent monitoring from both the Endocrinology and Orthopedic teams. Doctors noted that cases of Paget’s disease are rare in India and often go undetected until a fracture occurs. Timely coordination and diagnosis were key to this success.

The patient’s family expressed gratitude towards the hospital, stating that the high-quality treatment and care enabled her to stand pain-free once again.

PMCH Chairman Rahul Agarwal congratulated the team, emphasizing that PMCH aims to provide world-class multi-specialty care under one roof. This collaborative effort between the Endocrinology and Orthopedic departments demonstrates that even the rarest diseases can be treated with modern technology and experienced doctors.

What is Paget’s Disease?
Paget’s disease is a rare bone disorder that disrupts the normal process of old bone breaking down and new bone forming. As a result, bones become abnormally large, weak, and misshapen. Cases are infrequent in India and are often diagnosed only when patients experience bone pain or sudden fractures. Timely endocrinology and orthopedic treatment can help manage the condition effectively.
