April 24, 2025 — San Francisco — WhatsApp has officially rolled out a new privacy-focused feature called Advanced Chat Privacy, offering users deeper control over how their conversations are shared and stored. This marks a significant step in the platform’s ongoing push to enhance user safety and protect sensitive conversations — especially in group chats.

The update, which was first leaked earlier this month, introduces a “new layer of privacy” applicable to both individual and group chats.
What is Advanced Chat Privacy?
Advanced Chat Privacy allows users to restrict the export of chats, disable auto-media downloads, and limit AI usage of message content — helping ensure that what’s said in the chat, stays in the chat.
According to WhatsApp, the feature is particularly useful for sensitive or semi-private group settings, such as health support groups, neighborhood planning chats, or community organization spaces — environments where participants might not know each other well but still require discretion.
Key Features:
-
Blocks chat export: Prevents members from exporting chat history
-
Stops media auto-download: Images and videos won’t be automatically saved to other participants’ devices
-
Disables AI use of messages: Ensures chat data isn’t fed into AI tools or language models
-
Applies to both personal and group chats
-
Easily accessible: Can be enabled via the chat settings by tapping the chat name, then selecting Advanced Chat Privacy
Though the feature doesn’t prevent screenshots, it acts as a deterrent to casual or automated content misuse, reinforcing WhatsApp’s stance on user-consented data sharing.
Future Roadmap for Privacy Enhancements
WhatsApp clarified that this is just the first iteration of Advanced Chat Privacy. The company plans to add additional protections in future updates, continuing its mission to offer more granular privacy options.
This move comes amid growing global scrutiny of data sharing practices and the rise of AI-powered message analysis, reinforcing WhatsApp’s commitment to end-to-end encrypted, private communication.
