April 17, 2025 Prayagraj, India — In a major push toward rural entrepreneurship and livestock development, the Indian government is now offering a 50% subsidy to individuals starting a goat farming business under the National Livestock Mission (NLM). The initiative is aimed at promoting self-employment and sustainable agriculture, especially in semi-urban and rural areas.
Up to ₹10 Lakh Subsidy for Goat Farming Units
According to Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Shivnath Yadav in Prayagraj, individuals venturing into goat farming can avail a loan of ₹20 lakh to start with a setup of 100 female goats and 5 male goats. Under the NLM scheme, the government provides a 50% subsidy, which amounts to ₹10 lakh.
This scheme is designed to minimize startup costs and encourage more people to adopt livestock farming as a primary or supplementary income source.
Land and Training Are Key Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the scheme, the following conditions must be met:

The applicant must own at least 1 acre of land for fodder cultivation

36 sq. ft. of space is required for building the goat shed

A 5-day certified training in goat farming is mandatory to avail the subsidy

Applicants must also prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and obtain bank consent before submitting their application
Dr. Yadav emphasized that as the number of goats increases, the land requirement and subsidy calculations will adjust proportionally.
