Tonk, May 26: Sachin Pilot, the National General Secretary of Congress and former Deputy Chief Minister, has launched a strong attack on the state government regarding the delay in local body elections. He accused the BJP government of intentionally postponing elections for panchayats, panchayat samitis, district councils, and urban local bodies, thereby undermining the democratic rights of the people in the state. Despite repeated reprimands from the High Court, the government continues to evade the electoral process with excuses, he claimed.
During his visit to Tonk, Pilot addressed rural gatherings in the Gram Panchayats of Palda and Barwas in the Todaraisingh area. He highlighted that the people are struggling for basic amenities like electricity and water, while the government is distracted by religious polarization and unnecessary issues instead of addressing the public’s concerns.
Pilot emphasized the achievements of previous Congress governments, stating that they have always worked to ensure public funds reach the people directly. He mentioned initiatives like MGNREGA, the Right to Education, and health schemes, asserting that Congress has enacted historic laws to empower the poor, farmers, and marginalized communities. He criticized the current government for failing to address public interest issues and for losing control over the administration.
He also stressed the importance of women’s empowerment, stating that if women can manage families and homes effectively, they can also excel as representatives. Pilot noted that Congress has consistently supported one-third reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies, while opposition parties have obstructed this progress. He pointed out that the representation women have gained in panchayats and urban bodies is a result of Congress’s visionary policies, which have strengthened democracy.
Pilot reassured the people of Tonk that despite being in opposition, there will be no decline in development projects in the area. He urged the public to support leadership that embraces all sections of society—poor, farmers, women, Dalits, backward classes, and tribals—rather than getting swayed by emotional and populist slogans.
During his tour, Pilot inaugurated several development projects, including two classrooms at the Government Primary School in Barwas, built at a cost of 1.6 million rupees from the MLA fund. He also inaugurated the repair work of the Anikat dam at a cost of 1 million rupees from the MLA fund. Local residents raised regional issues and development-related concerns during the visit, to which Pilot assured them of solutions.
