Political Turmoil in the U.S. Over Iran Policy: Republicans Back Trump, Democrats Push for Military Action Limits

Washington, February 27: The debate over Iran policy is intensifying among U.S. political leaders. Senate Majority Leader John Thune supports President Donald Trump’s approach, while House Democrats are pushing for a vote on a proposal to limit military action.

Speaking on Fox News, Thune stated, “The President is committed to safe streets, more money in Americans’ pockets, and new opportunities for progress.”

Regarding foreign policy, he emphasized, “I believe the President is preparing us to protect America’s vital national security interests in that region and country. We cannot tolerate a nuclear-armed Iran. The President made this clear in his speech last night. I think a significant majority of the American public agrees.”

Thune also noted that the U.S. has essential interests in the area and that the President is adopting a policy of peace through strength, ensuring that the right resources are available at the right time and place if needed. He expressed hope that such measures would not be necessary. If Iran comes to the negotiating table, a deal could be possible.

Meanwhile, House Democratic leaders announced that when Congress reconvenes next week, they will hold a vote on the bipartisan Khanna-Massie Iran War Powers proposal in the full House.

In a joint statement, Democratic leaders said, “As Congress reconvenes next week, we will be compelled to hold a vote on the bipartisan Khanna-Massie War Powers proposal in the House of Representatives.”

They added, “This legislation will require the President to present his case to Congress before using military force against Iran.”

They also stated, “We believe that any such action without consultation and approval from Congress would be unconstitutional. Next week, every member will have the opportunity to register whether they support military action against Iran without Congressional approval.”

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called for more clarity from the administration while U.S. and Iranian officials were in talks in Geneva.

In the Senate, Schumer remarked, “The administration must clearly communicate to the American public what its goals are in Iran. I have always said that strategy, clarity, and transparency are essential to confront Iran and curb its nuclear ambitions. But so far, we have not received any of this from the administration. The American public deserves answers.”

Meanwhile, Senators Jackie Rosen and Dave McCormick introduced a bipartisan Iran human rights, Internet Freedom, and Accountability Act to increase pressure on Tehran following internet blackouts and protests.

Rosen stated, “The people of Iran are forced to live under an oppressive regime that has used censorship and internet blackouts to undermine their fight for freedom.”

“Iran’s future should be determined by its people, who deserve the right to secure their rights and have free access to information.”

McCormick added that this legislation is “based on America’s efforts to stand with the Iranian people against an economically, militarily, and morally bankrupt regime.”
