Former CM Gehlot Criticizes Government Over Delay in Local Elections

Jalore, June 22: Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has launched a strong attack on the Rajasthan government regarding the delay in conducting Panchayati Raj and local body elections. Speaking to the media in Jalore, Gehlot stated that it is the government’s responsibility to hold elections on time within the constitutional framework. He accused the current administration of avoiding elections out of fear of defeat.

Gehlot emphasized that Panchayati Raj and local bodies are fundamental units of democracy. If the government fails to conduct elections for these institutions on time, it goes against the spirit of democracy and the Constitution. He urged all citizens to collectively condemn this situation.

He further claimed that a government that does not respect constitutional norms loses its moral right to remain in power. Gehlot suggested that the Governor should recommend the immediate dismissal of the current government to the President.

The former Chief Minister remarked that the current state of affairs in the country is serious, and under the guise of the “double engine” slogan, democratic institutions are being weakened. He stated that postponing elections is not merely an administrative delay but a denial of the public’s right to choose their representatives.

Gehlot recalled his own experience from 1998 when he was Chief Minister during a period of employee strikes. He noted that while it was challenging to hold elections at that time, the High Court mandated that they must proceed. His government respected the judiciary’s order, and despite the strikes, elections were successfully conducted with the cooperation of other officials.

He accused the current government of fearing significant losses for the BJP in the Panchayati Raj and local elections, which is why elections have not been held despite directives from the High Court and Supreme Court.

Gehlot asserted that if the government has confidence in its performance, it should not fear elections. In a democracy, seeking a mandate from the public is the ultimate test, yet the government appears to be looking for ways to avoid elections.

In Rajasthan, the Panchayati Raj and local body elections have been pending for a long time. Despite the High Court setting deadlines, issues related to reservations, the OBC representation commission’s report, and the electoral process have delayed the election schedule.

Gehlot’s statements have intensified the political discourse surrounding the Panchayati Raj and local elections in the state. The Congress party is attacking the government by linking this issue to democracy and the Constitution, while the government cites procedural reasons for the delay in elections.

Political analysts believe that the delay in these elections could become a significant political issue in the coming days. Local body and Panchayati Raj elections are directly tied to the politics of villages, towns, and cities. Thus, the delay not only affects administrative systems but also raises questions about local political representation.

Currently, Gehlot’s remarks have increased political pressure on the government. All eyes are now on what steps the state government will take to advance the election process and its next moves concerning the High Court’s deadlines.
