Mumbai, June 30: Political tensions have escalated regarding the alleged theft of donations at the Ayodhya Ram Temple. Late Monday night, around 11:30 PM, police detained Ajay Rai, the Congress state president, at a hotel in Ayodhya. Shortly after, he was moved to a guest house at the agricultural university.
Reports indicate that Congress MPs Kishori Lal Sharma, Tanuj Poonia, and Ujjwal Raman Singh were also placed under house arrest. A delegation led by Ajay Rai had arrived in Ayodhya to protest against the alleged theft of donations. The Congress leaders had announced plans to surround the trust office on Tuesday.
In anticipation of the proposed protest, police and administration took strict measures. Ajay Rai was detained at the hotel and later moved to the guest house. Authorities also monitored the activities of other Congress MPs and leaders.
The Congress party claims that a fair investigation and accountability are essential in the donation-related case. They argue that transparency is crucial regarding matters tied to the faith of devotees.
Around 12:30 PM on Tuesday, Congress workers attempted to march towards the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple. Police stopped them near the Tedhi Bazaar area, approximately one kilometer from the temple.
Upon being halted, Congress workers became agitated and clashed with police. As the situation escalated, law enforcement used minimal force and detained several activists. Officers were seen escorting the detained individuals into vehicles.
Congress leaders condemned the police action as an attempt to suppress democratic protests. They assert that issues like the alleged donation theft are linked to the faith of millions and that questioning such matters is the opposition’s right.
The party has demanded a thorough investigation into the entire incident, insisting that if any irregularities are found, those responsible should face consequences.
Earlier, Ajay Rai’s wife, Reena Rai, released a video from Varanasi expressing her displeasure over the police action. She questioned the detention of Ajay Rai, stating that the Congress leader had come to Ayodhya solely to seek answers on issues affecting the faith of devotees.
Currently, security in Ayodhya has been tightened. Police have deployed additional forces around the Ram Janmabhoomi complex, trust office, and key surrounding routes. The administration remains on high alert in response to the potential protests by Congress workers.
