New Delhi, July 4: Political discussions have surged following the meeting between Sukhjinder Singh Randaawa, the Congress in-charge for Rajasthan and MP from Punjab, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The meeting, held on Friday, has sparked various interpretations in political circles, although Randaawa has dismissed these as politically motivated. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra have publicly supported Randaawa.
In a media interaction, Randaawa stated that his meeting with Amit Shah was focused on serious issues concerning Punjab’s deteriorating law and order, Pakistan-backed terrorism, narco-terrorism, gangster networks, and national security. He emphasized that attempts to politicize this meeting are malicious.
Randaawa revealed that he had written to the Prime Minister on June 4, with a copy sent to the Union Home Minister. The letter addressed issues such as Punjab’s law and order, terrorist activities supported by Pakistan, narco-terrorism, alleged collusion between gangsters and politicians, and the political misuse of the Punjab Police. He also provided information about a notorious gangster active in his region.
On June 23, Randaawa sent another letter detailing gangster activities in Gurudaspur and other areas. He indicated that these letters were the basis for his invitation to meet with the Union Home Minister. During the meeting, he discussed critical issues including the role of central agencies, extortion in Punjab, threats, and the use of mobile phones from within jails.
Randaawa asserted that if the Indian government believes the current situation poses a threat to national security, especially with direct interference from Pakistan, it cannot shirk its responsibilities. He stressed that this issue transcends political parties and is fundamentally about the nation’s security.
Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also expressed his support for Randaawa, highlighting that Randaawa’s family is among the most respected in Punjab. His father, Santokh Singh Randaawa, previously served as the Punjab Congress president and bravely voiced support for national unity during turbulent times in Punjab. Gehlot noted that the Randaawa family has consistently taken a clear stance against extremism and anti-national forces.
Gehlot further stated that due to their commitment to national interests, Randaawa and his family have faced continuous threats, making it the government’s moral and constitutional duty to ensure their safety. He criticized the politicization of Randaawa’s meeting with the Union Home Minister regarding such serious matters.
Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra echoed this sentiment, asserting that the law and order situation in Punjab and security in border areas are responsibilities that extend beyond any single party. He pointed out that during his tenure as Home Minister in the previous Congress government, Randaawa took strong actions against anti-national elements, which has led to ongoing threats against his family.
Dotasra urged that Randaawa’s meeting with Amit Shah should be understood in the broader context of national security rather than through a political lens. He emphasized that a true Congress member remains steadfast in ideology while responsibly addressing issues of national interest.
Political observers believe that Randaawa’s meeting with the Union Home Minister has intensified discussions amid ongoing tensions within the Punjab Congress and security challenges in the state. However, Randaawa and other Congress leaders have clarified that the meeting was not political but rather focused on law and order and national security issues in Punjab.
