Jaipur, July 18: Former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje visited the residence of 97-year-old Sumitra Singh, the former Speaker of the Rajasthan Assembly, to inquire about her health. Singh has been unwell for some time. During their meeting, the two senior leaders engaged in a heartfelt discussion, reminiscing about their past political and social experiences. Raje expressed her wishes for Singh’s speedy recovery and long life.
Sumitra Singh, despite her illness, spoke enthusiastically about the women-centric policies and initiatives during Raje’s tenure as Chief Minister. She highlighted that under Raje’s leadership, women’s empowerment was prioritized, resulting in significant decisions that strengthened women’s roles in families and society.
The conversation also touched on the Bhama Shah Women Empowerment Scheme, which aimed to make women the heads of their families, connecting them to government programs and financial benefits. This initiative was noted as a crucial step towards enhancing women’s economic independence and participation in family decision-making.
Additionally, they recalled the decision to reserve 50% of seats for women in Panchayati Raj elections. Both leaders acknowledged this as a significant move to increase women’s participation in rural politics and local governance, providing many women with opportunities to serve as sarpanch, pradhan, and in other elected positions.
Raje and Singh also discussed initiatives aimed at promoting girls’ education, such as the distribution of scooters and bicycles. These programs were designed to facilitate easier access to schooling and encourage girls to continue their education.
At the end of their meeting, Vasundhara Raje prayed for Sumitra Singh’s good health and longevity. She also inquired about her treatment and health updates from family members. Attendees described the meeting as emotional and memorable, highlighting the longstanding relationship and shared political experiences between the two leaders.
