New Delhi, July 23: Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee has been suspended from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the monsoon session due to allegations of using inappropriate and unparliamentary language towards female MPs. Following his suspension, he has been instructed to leave the premises for the duration of the session, which is scheduled to conclude on August 13.
The presiding officer, Krishna Prasad Teneti, stated that complaints had been received from female members of the House. He emphasized that such comments have undermined the dignity of the House and that such behavior from any MP is unacceptable.
Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal proposed the suspension of Kalyan Banerjee, which was passed by voice vote amid protests from opposition MPs. Subsequently, the proceedings of the Lok Sabha were adjourned for the day.
Reports indicate that prior to the adjournment, Kalyan Banerjee had a heated argument with female MPs from the Nationalist Citizens Party of India. Former TMC MPs Shatabdi Roy and Mithali Baag lodged a complaint with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, alleging that Banerjee had used derogatory language against them.
In a related incident earlier in May 2026, former TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar had also sought permission from the Lok Sabha Speaker to file a formal complaint against Banerjee, claiming he verbally abused her and made misogynistic comments. Banerjee has previously dismissed these allegations as false and fabricated.
