New Delhi, July 28: Social and environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk was discharged from Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Monday. After leaving the hospital around 1:45 PM, he visited Raj Ghat in Delhi with his wife, Dr. Geetanjali, to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. He emphasized the significance of non-violence and peaceful protests.
Speaking to the media at Raj Ghat, Wangchuk stated that the principles of non-violence and satyagraha demonstrated by Mahatma Gandhi remain as relevant today as they were nearly a century ago. He credited the positive outcomes of his demands to the peaceful nature of his movement.
Wangchuk remarked, “I want to tell the country that the path shown by Bapu is still as correct and relevant as it was 100 years ago. Our victory is due to the peaceful movement. Had there been violence, the situation could have worsened. Therefore, I decided to end my fast early.”
He had been on a hunger strike for 26 days at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, protesting various issues related to Ladakh and the NEET paper leak. His health deteriorated due to the prolonged lack of food, prompting the police to admit him to Safdarjung Hospital under a directive from the Delhi High Court.
Later, for better treatment and medical supervision, he was transferred to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. After his health improved, doctors discharged him on Monday.
Wangchuk’s immediate visit to Raj Ghat after his release is seen as a message of his commitment to Gandhian principles. He advocated for dialogue, satyagraha, and peaceful protests as the means to express demands within a democratic framework, rather than resorting to violence.
He also expressed gratitude to the citizens, students, social organizations, and political representatives who supported him during his movement. Wangchuk affirmed that the struggle for public interest issues will continue, but it will remain within the bounds of the Constitution and non-violence.
