Mumbai, March 4: Apple’s latest iPad Air refresh is making waves with early benchmark results that suggest its performance is surprisingly close to that of the iPad Pro.
Shortly after the announcement, the first Geekbench 6 results for the M4-powered iPad Air surfaced online. In these tests, the tablet achieved a score of 3,714 in single-core performance and 12,296 in multi-core performance.
These figures bring it remarkably close to the Apple iPad Pro (M4), which typically scores around 3,691 in single-core and 13,663 in multi-core benchmarks. This means that single-threaded performance is nearly identical, while the Air lags behind the Pro by about 10% in multi-core tasks.
This difference is not surprising when examining the chip configurations. The iPad Air features an 8-core version of the M4 chip, comprising three performance cores and five efficiency cores. In contrast, the iPad Pro boasts a 10-core variant with four performance cores and six efficiency cores.
The additional cores in the Pro model are beneficial for software that can take advantage of multiple threads, such as exporting large video projects or heavy multitasking. However, for everyday tasks, the difference may be less noticeable. Activities like browsing, media consumption, note-taking, and most creative workloads typically do not fully utilize all available cores.
This positioning allows the Air to be significantly more affordable than the Pro lineup while still incorporating Apple’s latest silicon. If these initial benchmarks are consistent in broader testing, the M4 iPad Air could find a sweet spot in Apple’s tablet offerings—delivering much of the Pro’s performance without the hefty price tag. For many users, the extra cores in the Pro may not significantly impact daily usage.
The M4 iPad Air is already available for pre-order, with retail availability expected on March 11. Pricing starts at approximately 4,799 yuan in China (around $659) for the 11-inch model with 128GB storage, while the 13-inch version begins at about 6,499 yuan (~$899). Prices and availability may vary by region.
