Jaipur, April 18: The political discourse surrounding the Women’s Reservation Bill has intensified. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi following his speech in the Lok Sabha, questioning the policies of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Gehlot pointed out that the BJP has never appointed a woman as its national president, while the Congress party has consistently provided women with opportunities for leadership roles.
In a post on the social media platform X, Gehlot emphasized that Congress has been the strongest advocate for women’s reservation, reflecting its long-term vision. He noted that over the past 25-30 years, countless women have gained leadership opportunities in grassroots politics due to Congress policies, which can be credited to Rajiv Gandhi’s Panchayati Raj system and the initiative for reservations in local bodies.
Highlighting Congress’s contributions, Gehlot mentioned that the country has seen its first female President, Pratibha Patil, its first female Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, and its first female Lok Sabha Speaker, Meira Kumar, all as a result of Congress’s ideology. In contrast, he pointed out that no woman has ever held the position of national president in the BJP.
Gehlot also suggested that the Prime Minister should have acknowledged Rajiv Gandhi and the efforts of the UPA government in his speech to foster a positive atmosphere in Parliament. He accused Modi of attempting to convey that Congress and other opposition parties oppose women’s reservation, while the reality is that all parties support the initiative.
Furthermore, the former Chief Minister questioned whether the Prime Minister had discussed this crucial issue with Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi. He linked the topic of delimitation to women’s reservation, asserting that any attempts to implement delimitation under the guise of women’s reservation require extensive discussions with all states and stakeholders, particularly in Southern India. Following these statements, there are indications that the political debate surrounding women’s reservation and delimitation will intensify, keeping these issues at the forefront of parliamentary and state politics in the future.
