Guwahati, May 4: Early trends from the Assam Assembly elections indicate a strong lead for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), suggesting a return to power in the state. With the initial results pouring in, the BJP has crossed the majority mark.
According to the Election Commission, trends for 126 assembly seats were released by 11 AM. The BJP is leading in 78 seats, while the Congress trails with leads in only 24 seats. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has managed to secure leads in two seats.
In the Jalukbari constituency, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is ahead by nearly 12,000 votes. In contrast, Gaurav Gogoi, the Congress president from Jorhat, is lagging behind by over 9,000 votes.
Counting is taking place at 40 centers across 35 districts in the state. Special arrangements have been made for districts with larger constituencies. In Nagaon, counting is happening at three different locations, while Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, and Jorhat each have two counting centers.
A total of 722 candidates, including 59 women, are contesting for the 126 assembly seats. The Congress fielded the largest number of candidates at 99, followed by the BJP with 90. The AIUDF contested in 30 seats.
Among NDA allies, the Asom Gana Parishad has nominated 26 candidates, while the Bodoland People’s Front contested in 11 seats. In the opposition coalition, the Raijor Dal fielded 13 candidates, the Assam Ethnic Council 10, the CPI(M) three, and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference two.
Other parties in the fray include the Aam Aadmi Party and the United People’s Party Liberal, both contesting in 18 seats. The Trinamool Congress and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha are contesting in 22 and 16 seats, respectively. Additionally, 258 independent candidates are also in the race.
Voting for the Assembly elections took place on April 9, with over 25 million voters casting their ballots. This year, the voter turnout reached an impressive 85.96%.
