Jodhpur, June 28: Central Minister of Culture and Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, announced that the third phase of the Lift Canal project will be crucial for Jodhpur and its surrounding areas. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance both the quantity and quality of drinking water supply in the city and rural regions. Shekhawat claimed that most obstacles related to the project have been resolved, and water from the third phase is anticipated to reach Jodhpur within the next three to four months.
During a media interaction on Saturday, the minister criticized the previous government for delaying this vital project for years. He stated that necessary forest and railway approvals were not obtained in a timely manner. With these hurdles now cleared, the project has reached its final stages.
Relief During Summers and Canal Closures
Shekhawat emphasized the need for reservoirs to address drinking water shortages in Jodhpur and nearby areas during the summer and the closure of the Indira Gandhi Canal. He mentioned that, during his tenure as the Minister of Water Resources, he secured approval for four additional reservoirs.
According to Shekhawat, filling of the Falasund reservoir has already begun, and the process will soon commence for the remaining reservoirs. He noted that there is a technical and revenue-related dispute concerning one reservoir, which has been directed to be resolved promptly.
Only Technical Work Remains for Phase Three
The central minister stated that the work for the third phase of the Lift Canal project is nearly complete, with only one technical task remaining. This involves constructing a bridge-like structure over the main canal to facilitate pipeline installation. Instructions have been given to complete this work within the next month.
He asserted that once the project is finalized, it will greatly strengthen the drinking water infrastructure in Jodhpur district. This will benefit not only the city but also rural drinking water schemes, helping to alleviate water scarcity during the summer months.
Comments on Yamuna Water Agreement
Shekhawat also addressed the Yamuna water agreement, noting that Rajasthan’s share of water had been stalled for years due to a lack of consensus between Haryana and Rajasthan. He mentioned his efforts to facilitate an agreement between the two states during his time as Minister of Water Resources, but the then-government led by Ashok Gehlot did not provide the necessary cooperation.
He highlighted that after the formation of the Bhajanlal Sharma government, an agreement was reached within 15 days, and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) has already been prepared. This agreement is expected to provide lasting relief to water-scarce areas in Rajasthan bordering Haryana, including Shekhawati.
Jodhpur Airport: A Foundation for Western Rajasthan’s Development
Regarding the expansion of Jodhpur Airport, Shekhawat stated that it represents more than just infrastructure development; it is a significant foundation for the growth of Western Rajasthan. He noted that until 2014, the airport could accommodate only two large aircraft at a time, with inadequate facilities for night landings or during adverse weather.
He praised the extensive expansion of Jodhpur Airport under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, which now allows for 12 aircraft to be stationed simultaneously. The airport’s passenger capacity has been increased nearly tenfold, designed to meet future needs for the next 35 years.
New Chapter in Development Begins on July 4
Shekhawat announced that the inauguration of Jodhpur Airport by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 4 will mark the beginning of a new chapter in the city’s development. He stated that this airport will boost tourism, trade, investment, and regional air connectivity.
He expressed gratitude to former Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar and Union Civil Aviation Minister K. R. Narayana for their contributions to this achievement. Shekhawat concluded that the second phase of Jodhpur Airport will provide new direction for tourism and economic development in Western Rajasthan.
