Jaipur, June 25: The Yamuna Water Project is set to reach a significant milestone for Rajasthan on June 29. Sources indicate that a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) will be signed in New Delhi, in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The agreement will involve the Ministry of Water Power, the Rajasthan government, and the Haryana government. Central Water Power Minister C.R. Patil and Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma will also be in attendance.
This MOA will finalize critical terms regarding water quantity, project costs, construction, operation, maintenance, and water distribution between Rajasthan and Haryana. It is anticipated that this agreement will be a decisive step in addressing the long-standing water demand in the Shekhawati region.
According to sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi may make a significant announcement regarding this project during the inauguration of the Pachpadra Refinery in Barmer on July 4. However, an official announcement or program is still awaited.
Rajasthan was allocated Yamuna water under a 1994 agreement, but the state has yet to receive its share. After 32 years, substantial progress is being made towards ensuring Rajasthan’s right to Yamuna water. The proposal is to deliver this water to the Shekhawati region via pipelines instead of traditional canals.
Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has been actively working to implement this project. The Yamuna water agreement is expected to provide 577 million cubic meters of water to towns and villages in the Churu, Sikar, and Jhunjhunu districts of the Shekhawati region. This could significantly alleviate the drinking water crisis for farmers and the general public.
The total cost of the project is estimated at ₹33,379 crore, with approximately ₹3,900 crore allocated for land acquisition. The plan involves laying three pipelines with a diameter of 3.6 meters to transport water to Rajasthan.
On Tuesday, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma discussed various aspects of the Yamuna Water Project’s implementation with Central Water Power Minister C.R. Patil and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini in New Delhi. The key points of the MOA were finalized during this meeting, and signing is expected on June 29.
However, the project faces significant challenges, particularly regarding land acquisition and the pipeline route. The plan includes laying a 302-kilometer long pipeline along the railway track, but only 68 kilometers of this length is currently available.
Additionally, approximately 252 kilometers will require land from national highways, state highways, and private land, including a 95-kilometer loop. Therefore, land acquisition, financial management, departmental approvals, and technical coordination will be crucial for the timely implementation of the project.
The MOA will specify the volume of Yamuna water allocated to Rajasthan and the duration for water release. It will also clarify the precise pipeline route, total construction costs, cost-sharing between the two states, and responsibilities for operation and maintenance.
The accountability and roles of Haryana, Rajasthan, and relevant central agencies will also be defined in the MOA. This will help ensure transparency and coordination in the project’s implementation.
The Yamuna Water Project is considered a lifeline for the Shekhawati region. Churu, Sikar, and Jhunjhunu have long struggled with drinking water shortages and declining groundwater levels. If the project is completed on time, it could significantly strengthen the water supply system in these districts.
Meanwhile, preparations are underway for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposed visit to Rajasthan on July 4. Reports suggest he will inaugurate the Pachpadra Refinery, lay the foundation stone for Jaipur Metro Phase-2, and dedicate the Jodhpur Airport terminal to the public.
Additionally, there is a possibility of distributing appointment letters to 34,000 selected candidates from recruitments made in the past year. It is reported that Prime Minister Modi may announce development projects worth over ₹1 lakh crore for Rajasthan.
These development initiatives include the ₹79,450 crore Pachpadra Refinery, approximately ₹14,000 crore for the Jaipur Metro Phase-2 project, and ₹500 crore for the Jodhpur Airport terminal, among others.
Overall, the Yamuna Water MOA, Pachpadra Refinery, Jaipur Metro Phase-2, and Jodhpur Airport terminal are seen as major components of Rajasthan’s development agenda. If the Yamuna Water Project materializes, it could be a historic step towards resolving the water crisis in the Shekhawati region.
