New Delhi, April 18: The political landscape surrounding the central government’s Women’s Reservation proposal is heating up. On Wednesday, an important meeting of opposition parties was held at Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence in New Delhi, attended by senior leaders including Rahul Gandhi. Representatives from Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad faction), and the Aam Aadmi Party also participated, strategizing on the Women’s Reservation Bill and its proposed amendments.
The central government is moving forward with the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, aiming to implement it ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. This proposal suggests increasing the number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 850, with 273 seats reserved for women. This change is viewed as a significant structural shift in the Indian parliamentary system.
The government is preparing to introduce a constitutional amendment bill during the special parliamentary session scheduled for April 16, 17, and 18. Sources indicate that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may respond to the debate on this issue on April 17.
However, political disagreements regarding this proposal are surfacing. Revanth Reddy has written to the Prime Minister opposing the increase in seats, arguing that it could create an imbalance for southern states based on population and is unacceptable to them.
Opposition parties assert their support for the principle of women’s reservation but emphasize the need for extensive discussion and consensus on its implementation and seat reorganization. While the government presents this initiative as a historic step, the opposition raises questions about its various aspects. A heated debate on this issue is anticipated in the upcoming special session.
