The expansion will significantly increase the airport’s passenger handling capacity. At present, the existing terminal can manage around 680 passengers at a time. Once the new terminal becomes operational, the capacity will increase to about 2,050 passengers simultaneously.

Passenger traffic at the airport has already been rising. In 2025, about 16.5 lakh passengers travelled through the airport during the year. The new terminal is being designed to handle around 45 lakh passengers annually (4.5 MPPA).

The new terminal will also add modern passenger facilities. Four new aerobridges are being installed, taking the total number to six. This will allow passengers from six different aircraft to board or disembark directly through the terminal at the same time.

To reduce waiting time at the airport, 42 new check-in counters are being added along with the existing ones. This will increase the total number of check-in counters to 55.

Inside the terminal, the arrival area will cover about 16,000 square metres, while the departure area will be around 19,000 square metres.

Several modern systems are also being introduced, including self baggage drop, self check-in, Wi-Fi services, body scanners and automatic tray systems for security checks. The building will also have 11 lifts and modern electronic display systems for advertisements and passenger information.

Parking capacity is also being expanded to address growing demand. Currently, the airport has space for about 300 vehicles. An additional 700 parking spaces are being developed, increasing the total capacity to around 1,000 vehicles.

As a major tourist destination, the new terminal will also reflect the art and culture of the Mewar region. Local artwork will be displayed inside the terminal, and a dedicated 200 square feet area in the shopping zone will be reserved for self-help groups to showcase Mewar handicrafts and local products.

Earlier, the Union Civil Aviation Minister, in response to Chittorgarh MP C. P. Joshi, stated that an airport cannot be declared international based only on runway and terminal infrastructure. International status also depends on interest from foreign airlines and bilateral agreements between countries.
