Jaipur, June 23: The political landscape in Rajasthan is heating up once again over the Yamuna Water Project. Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra has raised questions regarding the proposed new agreement aimed at supplying Yamuna water to the Shekhawati region. He alleges that the new agreement compromises the interests of Rajasthan.
Dotasra has expressed skepticism about the plan to bring water to Rajasthan via pipeline. He warns that if water is transported through Haryana, there is a risk of leakage and misuse in Haryana’s villages along the route. He demands a clear response from the government on how and when Rajasthan will receive its full share of water.
On social media platform X, Dotasra stated that the people of Shekhawati do not want false MOUs; they need their rightful share of water. He emphasized that any compromise on Rajasthan’s interests will not be tolerated.
Targeting the state government, Dotasra criticized the BJP administration for merely playing the MOU game over the past two and a half years. He questioned how many times MOUs will be signed regarding Yamuna water. According to him, recent statements from Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma indicate that the MOU mentioned repeatedly for June 17, 2024, is limited to paper and speeches.
He accused the government of confusing the people of Shekhawati with agreements and announcements rather than delivering tangible results. Dotasra argued that if the previous MOU was effective, there would be no need for a new agreement. The government should clarify how much water Rajasthan has received since the old agreement and how far the project has progressed.
The Congress party asserts that the Shekhawati region has long struggled with drinking water and irrigation crises. The public needs relief not just from political announcements but from actual water supply. Dotasra reiterated that the people of Shekhawati deserve their share of water and that Congress will continue to demand answers from the government on this issue.
He also stated that no compromise on Rajasthan’s water interests will be accepted. Dotasra has called for the government to publicly disclose the project’s actual status, the amount of water, the pipeline route, coordination with Haryana, and the water distribution system.
Notably, a significant meeting regarding the Yamuna Water Project took place in New Delhi, attended by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Union Minister for Jal Shakti C.R. Patil, and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. The meeting focused on the implementation of the project and finalizing key points of the MOU. The government claims that this project will provide drinking water to the Shekhawati region and irrigation water for farmers.
The government is considering a plan to deliver water through pipelines instead of traditional canal systems to conserve water and enhance the distribution system’s effectiveness. However, Congress questions this arrangement, deeming it insufficiently protective of Rajasthan’s interests.
The Yamuna Water Project has long been a significant political and public interest issue for the Shekhawati region. Due to the drinking water crisis and declining groundwater levels in areas like Churu, Sikar, and Jhunjhunu, this project is deemed crucial. Political confrontations between the government and opposition may intensify over this issue.
Currently, the government claims it is working to expedite the project, while Congress raises concerns about the MOU, actual water availability, and Rajasthan’s share. In the coming days, the Yamuna Water Project could become a central political issue in Shekhawati.
