Farmers Protest Ends After Assurance from Agriculture Minister in Gangapur City

Gangapur City, June 24: The farmers’ protest demanding the release of water from the Panchna Dam has concluded after 20 days in Khandip. Agriculture Minister Dr. Kirorilal Meena assured farmers that water would be released within a week, leading to the announcement of the protest’s end during a mahapanchayat.

A 11-member committee will be formed to discuss farmers’ demands and issues related to water release from the Panchna Dam with the government. Following the protest’s conclusion, police and administrative officials expressed relief.

Addressing the mahapanchayat, Minister Dr. Meena emphasized that this struggle is not tied to any political party but is a fight for farmers. He acknowledged the burden of debt faced by farmers and shared that he could not attend the protest earlier due to a family bereavement. He sent Golma Devi in his place, but farmers insisted he come himself.

Dr. Meena stated that he has been continuously updated on the movement and has previously written to the Chief Minister regarding this issue. He assured farmers that if they trust him, he would secure a written commitment from the irrigation minister to ensure water release without future interruptions.

The minister praised the significant participation of women in the movement, noting that he has never seen such a large number of women involved in any protest throughout his life. He commended all leaders and farmers for conducting the movement peacefully.

He highlighted that the 20 years of hard work and the 20-day protest reflect the unity of farmers. The government has respected the sentiments and struggles of the farmers, which led to their agreement to end the protest after the assurance of water release.

In his address, Dr. Meena referenced a High Court ruling from 2022, which he had previously protested against, resulting in a year-long sentence. He remarked on the increased participation of farmers and women in this current movement compared to previous protests.

He also mentioned that Home State Minister Jawahar Singh Bedham has been actively working in Karoli for the past six days. Discussions at the government level are ongoing regarding the farmers’ demands, and steps toward a resolution will be taken soon.

It is noteworthy that the protest began on June 5, led by Gangapur City MLA Ramkesh Meena, with farmers demanding the release of water from the Panchna Dam to aid irrigation.

During the mahapanchayat in Khandip, several leaders from both parties attended, including MLAs from various constituencies and former legislators.

With the protest concluded, farmers are now focused on the government’s next steps. If solid action is taken within a week regarding the water release, the long-standing dispute over the Panchna Dam may finally move toward resolution.
